Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible? 

Eligibility is based on whether your transcript fulfills the criteria listed here. As mentioned there, you also need proof of English language proficiency (B2). 

In our experience students with a bachelor’s degree in something other than computer science (i.e. computer engineering, electrical engineering or information systems management as well as many applied computer science degree programs) are oftentimes missing courses in the area of theoretical foundations of computer science. We are unable to give you a definitive answer as to whether your transcript fulfills the criteria since that must be determined by the examination board and will only be assessed once you send in an application. 


What language certificate do I need? 

You need to provide proof of English language proficiency. You can find a list of accepted certificates etc. here


Do I need to know German? Do I need a German language certificate? 

Proof of German language proficiency is not required for the application. Some courses are offered in German, but since all courses are electives it is possible to complete the degree program entirely in English by choosing only courses offered in English. 


Can I apply if I don’t have my bachelor’s degree yet? 

There is a regulation for this, however it only applies to applicants from German universities, so international students will only be able to apply once you have your official degree certificate. You can also apply every semester though, so you don't have to wait a whole year. 


What are the tuition fees?  

All students at TU Berlin are required to pay the semester fee every semester. This includes international students.  

There are no separate tuition fees for the MSc in Computer Science.


When and how can I apply? 

Applications are always for the coming semester and go through Uni-Assist. You can find a checklist of the required documents and formats here


What is my application status? 

We are not part of the application process and have no information about the status of your application. You could look up your status yourself here, using your application number and your birthday. 


When does the application period end? 

The deadlines for applications are always published here as soon as they are set. 


When do lectures start? 

You can find all the information about semester dates and deadlines here.

Please note that there is a difference between the semester and the lecture period: Usually the lecture period starts about two weeks into the semester and ends well before the semester ends. The period after the lecture period ends and before the next one starts is often referred to as the semester break. However for most modules examination dates will be after the end of the lecture period (usually at the beginning or end of the semester break), so make sure you are still in Berlin at the time of your exams. 


Are there any orientation events? 

You can find all the information about orientation lectures etc. here


What about accommodation? 

You can contact the Studierendenwerk about accommodation, however they usually only have very few rooms available, so we recommend also looking into flatshare opportunities through websites like wg-gesucht. 


I’ve enrolled, now what? 

You should pick your courses for your first semester now (and maybe already find some you may want to take later). Start by reading about the program structure and going through the module lists to find some courses that interest you. You can find information about the program structure here and the module lists here

Next, check the module descriptions of the modules that interest you for the “Turnus” information which will tell you whether the module (or component of the module) is usually offered during the winter semester, summer semester or both. For those that will be offered in the coming semester, check the teaching page on the institute’s website (linked at the top of the module description) or the Directory to find out when and where the lectures etc. will take place. If you have already received your TubIT account information (or once you receive it), look for the course page in ISIS, where you will usually also find the information about dates, times and locations of the module components (“enrolling” for a course on ISIS just gives you access to the course page, it does not officially sign you up for the course). Make sure you have the correct course page, there are separate ones for each semester as ISIS is also an archive and while it may be useful to access the older course pages for material etc. you need to be enrolled on the course page for the current semester to receive emails about announcements, hand in assignments etc. 

There is no official sign up procedure for the modules before the semester starts, however sometimes the institutes have internal sign up systems. In that case you will find the information about how to sign up for the course in the module description or on the ISIS course page. In most cases though, you just need to go to the first lecture and will receive all further information there. That includes the deadline for the exam registration, which is the one official registration for the module and usually happens during the semester (deadlines differ depending on the type of exam). 


What types of exams are there? 

A module can have one of three examination types: written, oral or portfolio. While most are familiar with written and oral exams, portfolio exams are TUB specific. For a portfolio exam you collect up to 100 portfolio points during the semester and after. Points may be collected through homework assignments, presentations, online quizzes, written exams etc., however the components of the course that points are assigned to are always set beforehand and listed in the module description. 


I won’t be here until after the lecture period has already started. 

If you know you will miss the first week(s) of lectures or have missed the first lectures but still want to take some courses this semester please contact the course supervisor for the courses you are interested in that are being offered this semester. You can find their respective contact information including an email address at the very top of the module descriptions (which you can find here). Ask them if it’s possible to join the course after missing the first lecture(s) and how to go about it. Please note that course supervisors will likely be different for each module and so will their policy on joining the course late.
