The aim of this thesis is to develop an interactive technique allowing to create 3D-objects in an immersive 3D environment. Immersive 3D environments are used for product-development and -review. Research on sketching shows that the prevalent technique in the early phase of product-design is still simple sketching on paper. Here, computer-assisted 3D-sketching promises to bring significant benefit, adding 3D impression and supplying the whole range of computer-aid. Modeling in immersive 3D environments is still a problem, though. To create an aiding tool for designers, fibermesh, a development of the CG department, is brought into a CAVE. Fibermesh is a desktop-application which creates and manipulates 3D models from 2D input-strokes. Interaction in 2D and 3D differ, so the interaction has to be adapted to the 3D environment and other possibilities have to be explored where 2D means do not work. Finally, a user study will provide information on the usefulness of the new sketching-technique. The thesis is supervised by Fraunhofer-Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK, Berlin.
