For Open-mindedness and Tolerance

With the Corona pandemic, (teaching) events at universities have shifted to digital spaces in many cases. This opens up many new possibilities for communicative exchange, especially in teaching and learning, but also brings with it various forms of discrimination and harassment. In particular, disturbing experiences in the context of public videoconferences with a larger number of participants are becoming more frequent, with so-called ZOOM bombing posing a particular problem.

At the TU Berlin, including Faculty IV, there have been several such online attacks in the recent past, in which unknown actors spontaneously gained access to online events and flooded them with anti-Semitic, racist, pornographic or unconstitutional statements, images and videos.

The TU Berlin once again takes this as an opportunity to condemn such attacks and their content in the strongest possible terms and to take a clear stand for an open-minded and tolerant society. In its mission statement, the TU Berlin commits itself to taking action against discrimination at all levels of the university organization. In this context, digital spaces in particular must also be as safe a place as possible for all university members.

Currents and groups that spread anti-Semitic, racist or other discriminatory ideas threaten the cornerstones of democracy. They can create an atmosphere in which members of higher education institutions no longer feel comfortable and safe and can jeopardize the development of Germany as a center of science and Berlin as a city of science.

At TU Berlin, we stand together for lived diversity and tolerance. Intolerance and discrimination have no place here and will be consistently pursued and reported in appropriate cases.

President of TU Berlin, Dec 2021
