The Research Traing Group "Sensory Computation in Neural Systems" receives further funding from the German Research Foundation until 2019. We are looking forward to further exciting research projects with new doctoral researchers!
Research Training Group GRK 1589/2
The Research Training Group "Sensory Computation in Neural Systems" combines techniques and concepts from computational neuroscience, systems neurobiology, and machine learning, in order to specifically address sensory computation. Experimentalists and theoreticians join forces and educate young scientists: (1) to work on interdisciplinary projects investigating brain computation, (2) to exploit recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence for modeling brain function, and (3) to develop new theories of computation hand in hand with well-controlled experiments in order to put functional hypotheses to test. Our long-term scientific vision is to build a theoretical framework for addressing brain computation which is as powerful and as accepted in the neurobiology community as compartmental models are for understanding signal processing in neurons.
The scientific program is focused on sensory coding and perception. Since perception is task dependent (“perception serves a purpose”) sensory processing is connected to cognitive functions (decision making, memory function, planning, and even motor control) and has to be linked to performance measures. Hence all experiments involve behaving animals or human subjects. Exploiting new ideas from the machine learning field, our aim is to develop theoretical concepts for specifically addressing temporally varying inputs, coding strategies for stimulus time series, and computation with dynamical systems.
The research training group is integrated into the PhD program of the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Berlin and is a cooperation of the Technische Universität Berlin (coordinatong institution), of the Charité Medical School, of the Freie Universität Berlin, and of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
